Can dry lining be used in a loft conversion?
Yes — dry lining is the standard finish for loft conversions in Gillingham. Plasterboard is fixed either directly to the rafters (where headroom permits) or to a timber or metal stud frame between them.
Gillingham loft conversions must meet:
- Building Regulations Part B (Fire Safety) — 30-minute fire resistance to escape routes, fire-rated plasterboard where required - Part E (Sound) — 40 dB Rw between converted and unconverted space - Part L (Thermal) — U-value 0.18 W/m²K or better for the pitched roof, usually achieved with 100-150mm mineral wool between rafters plus a thermal liner - Part C (Damp) — vapour control layer on the warm side of the insulation
We install insulated plasterboard to meet Part L, vapour control layers to prevent condensation, and fire-rated plasterboard where Part B requires. Building Control sign-off is handled by Gillingham City Council Building Control on your behalf.
