Can dry lining improve soundproofing?
Yes. Acoustic plasterboard (denser than standard board) combined with acoustic insulation in the cavity and resilient bar or isolation clips can improve sound resistance by 10-20 dB Rw.
This is essential for:
- Part E compliance in HMO conversions (40 dB Rw between bedsits) - Separating walls between flats (45 dB Rw for new-build, 43 dB for conversions) - Home offices, recording studios, media rooms - Gillingham apartments, the Medway towns commercial space, and Manchester city-fringe student lets
British Standard BS EN ISO 717 rates airborne sound insulation. For Gillingham HMO conversions under Article 4 (Houses in Multiple Occupation), Building Control will sign off only with proof of adequate acoustic performance — we provide this in the design pack.
Common high-performance system: 50mm metal stud + 25mm acoustic wool + 2 layers of 15mm SoundBloc plasterboard each side, achieving 55-60 dB Rw.
