Drylining Gillingham

Gillingham Drylining FAQ

How do you deal with damp in Gillingham Victorian terrace walls before dry lining?

Damp is one of the most common pre-drylining issues in Gillingham's Victorian terraces. We follow a strict sequence before any plasterboard goes up:

1. Diagnose the source — rising damp, penetrating damp, or condensation? Each has a different remedy.

2. Rising damp treatment — chemical DPC injection (silane or siloxane-based) at 150mm above external ground level. Costs £80-£150 per metre run in Gillingham.

3. Penetrating damp — repoint defective mortar, repair or replace gutters and downpipes, fix flashing, render where needed.

4. Allow the wall to dry — typically 1 month per 25mm of wall thickness. We use a moisture meter to confirm dry before lining.

5. Independent metal stud lining — once dry, build a 50mm metal stud frame with a ventilated cavity at the base and top, fix moisture-resistant plasterboard, and skim. This isolates the new finish from any residual moisture in the original wall.

For Gillingham terraces in Luton and Grange, and parts of Hempstead, this is the most reliable approach. Dot-and-dab onto a damp wall will fail within months; independent stud will last the lifetime of the building.

We handle the damp diagnosis and treatment as part of the drylining package if needed, or coordinate with a specialist damp contractor.
